Council is set to receive a total of $515,468 from the Australian Government’s Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program to develop a business incubator and co-working space in the heart of Moree, in partnership with the University of New England. This funding will be accompanied by a $80,000 contribution by Council.
The project supports Council’s goal of furthering economic development and diversification outcomes in our Shire and draws upon the significant expertise of the University of New England (UNE).
What’s a Smart Regional Incubator (SRI)?
An ‘incubator’ helps to develop start-up businesses and provides support for existing businesses to scale-up. Moree Plains Shire Council has partnered with the incredible team at the University of New England to extend their existing SMART Region Incubator program to the Moree Plains.
Based in Armidale, the UNE has a proven track record in developing its SMART Region Incubator program, with two incubators already established since 2017 – the first of which was delivered in partnership with Tamworth Regional Council and the second from the Armidale UNE campus.
Known as the Greenhouse, this exciting space will not only house the UNE SMART Region Incubator program and staff member, but also provide a co-working space for local and visiting businesses and individuals. It will be located in Moree’s CBD and will provide the core resources a new business needs to succeed – such as a workspace, a reliable high-speed internet connection, a network of like-minded business people and access to business coaching, mentors and partners through the UNE SRI program. Importantly, the Greenhouse will also provide a social outlet and resource for the many businesses in the Moree Plains that currently operate from home.
What does this mean for local businesses?
For existing business owners, the Greenhouse is likely to boost local spending in cafes and retail stores, provide a place to meet and do business, as well improve local capacities through on-site training and development. The Greenhouse will entice innovation and investment in the Moree Plains Shire and North West NSW.
